Lois Gunden

Lois Gunden was a French teacher from Indiana, working in the south of France in 1941. Based in a children’s home in the Mediterranean coastal town of Canet Plage, Gunden turned the home into a refuge for Spanish and Jewish children smuggled out of the nearby Rivesaltes internment camp. When the Nazis occupied southern France in November 1942, she continued to run the home, but was detained in January 1943. She survived the war, being released in a prisoner exchange in 1944 and returning to the US.
