KURT GERSTEIN

Back

Kurt Gerstein was a German SS officer and head of technical disinfection services of the Institute for Hygiene of the Waffen-SS who initially believed he could best resist Nazi rule by working inside the system. However, after witnessing mass murders in the Belzec and Treblinka death camps, Gerstein gave a detailed report to a Swedish and Swiss diplomats as well as people close to Pope Pius XII.

In 1945, following his surrender, he wrote the Gertsein Report covering his experience of the Holocaust. He is believed to have committed suicide whilst in French custody.
