Gruppe 33

Despite Switzerland’s neutrality, various Swiss groups and individuals took a clear anti-fascist stance. Gruppe 33 were a collective of artists based in Basel, formed on 10 May 1933, the day of a Nazi book burning event in Berlin. Resolutely opposing the Nazis’ hostility to “degenerate” art, as well as Switzerland’s own Nazi sympathisers and the country’s conservative artistic establishment, they continued to champion avant-garde art during and following the war in defiance. In this respect, they continued a tradition started by the ‘Dada’ movement at Zurich’s Cabaret Voltaire club during WWI, a movement which included refugee artists.
